I take a lot of inspiration from one of Picasso’s paintings, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (seen below). I remember discussing this work in Prof. Sawicki’s ART-220 class a couple semesters ago, and I loved everything from the story behind it to the color palette used. It’s such a powerful piece and Picasso’s style of painting only adds to the rough and edgy feel of the painting. I remember, with this piece in particular, Prof. Sawicki and my class taking at least 20 minutes to dissect and comprehend everything that was happening in it. Last year in Prof. Travers’ Drawing I class, I sampled colors from Les Demoiselles D’Avignon for a photoshop project because I loved it so much. I think I tend to gravitate towards artists and paintings that are able to tell a complete story on a single canvas and force me to find a deeper meaning.
After taking DES-053 with Prof. Lusch this past semester, I realized my fondness for typography, especially in a graphic context. I’ve been following Steffi Lynn (@haveanicedayy_) for a while now, and have taken inspiration / have gotten so much joy from her work. Along with her motivational phrases, her bright and graphic style always puts me in a better mood. I love her posters in particular, but she also makes cards, stickers, mugs, and has even painted murals in various cities around the US. She also posts short clips of her creative process and the steps she takes to make each project, which is very cool to watch.
